Wednesday are back at Hillsborough this weekend for our final game before Christmas!

After successive draws away from home against Derby and Exeter, the Owls return to S6 for a clash against Oxford.

It’s a coming together of two sides in resilient form.

Darren Moore’s side are on the league’s current longest unbeaten run – nine games. The U’s, meanwhile, are seven without defeat in the third tier.

Although down in 16th spot, our visitors this weekend have recovered well from a slow start and are now climbing the table nicely over recent weeks.

The Owls could go top of the table with a win, should results fall favourably elsewhere.

TEAM NEWS

Wednesday: Barry Bannan’s scan results have shed positive light on the skipper’s injury concerns from last week at Exeter.

Darren Moore is set to approach with caution and the captain could miss out this weekend, with the aim to be back up and running on Boxing Day.

“He's a wonderful player and talisman for us. But that's why the precaution is there. If we take him out for one game it's to save him for the remainder,” Moore said.

George Byers has trained in full with the squad this week and is in contention to feature.

Dennis Adeniran and Akin Famewo are also options for the game.

Oxford: Yanic Wildschut and Josh Murphy are pushing for a return to the side after recovering from injury.

Midfielder Alex Gorrin (knee) has been ruled out for the season, while strike duo Kyle Joseph and Sam Baldock are expected back in the New Year.

Match Reports

Report: Wednesday 0-0 Oxford

17 December 2022

Wednesday extended their run of resistance to 10 league games, playing out a 0-0 draw with Oxford at Hillsborough.

A game of few chances in bitterly cold conditions spawned little incident of note until right at the last when Cameron Dawson, making his first league start of the season, saved a penalty from Josh Murphy.

Defeat would have been harsh on the Owls, who bossed the ball for large parts of the game, and Dawson ensured his side took a share of the spoils.

Darren Moore shuffled his pack, making four changes to the team that posted a point at Exeter last Saturday against an Oxford outfit in the midst of a productive run themselves, unbeaten in seven.

And they gave the Owls a scare inside just two minutes when Marcus Browne burst into the box but slipped at the vital moment, allowing Dawson to gratefully gather.

Dawson was required 10 minutes later, dashing off his line to thwart Cameron Brannagan, who was favourite to score having motored into the area on the angle.

Wednesday enjoyed plenty of possession but had to wait to the half-hour mark to move into a real purple patch when three chances were created in quickfire fashion.

Marvin Johnson dragged wide from a swift counter before Callum Paterson went close from eight yards, then Josh Windass smashed past the post after a goalmouth scramble.

Wednesday introduced Michael Smith and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru early in the second half to inject fresh legs and the Owls continued to dominate much of the possession.

Smith was a whisker away from making an impact, flinging himself at a delicious Johnson cross that just evaded the big striker.

Then with 13 minutes to go, and from nowhere, Oxford could and should have taken the lead.

Dawson parried a fierce Yanic Wildschut effort which was pounced upon by Matty Taylor, whose low hit was goalbound until a terrific intervention from Mark McGuinness on the line. The loose ball fell to James Henry but the wideman somehow blazed over the bar from close range.

Wednesday almost capitalised on that profligacy as Paterson forced Simon Eastwood into a fine save before late, late drama in stoppage time.

McGuinness tangled with Gatlin O’Donkor and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Murphy stepped up and his penalty was well-placed but Dawson flung to his right to preserve a deserved clean sheet.

Wednesday: Dawson, Palmer, Iorfa, McGuinness, James, Vaulks (Dele-Bashiru 60), Bakinson, Johnson, Paterson, Windass (Smith 60), Gregory
