Match preview: Owls v Morecambe

14 February 2023

Wednesday v Morecambe
Tuesday 14 February
League One

The club are extremely disappointed to report that objects were thrown towards the field of play during our last two home games against Fleetwood Town and Plymouth Argyle.

We would stress in the strictest tone that any individual proven to have perpetrated such an act will face the maximum possible sanctions in line with EFL Ground Regulations.

We remind supporters once again that this behaviour is completely unacceptable and with the aid of CCTV imagery, Sheffield Wednesday will not hesitate to exercise our zero tolerance policy.

While such incidents are isolated and very much in the minority, they are not and never will be tolerated at Hillsborough.

EFL Ground Regulations can be found HERE.

Under the banner of ‘Love Football. Protect The Game’ the FA, Premier League and EFL have together introduced new measures and stronger sanctions across the game to tackle the increased anti-social, discriminatory and criminal behaviours seen within football grounds.

After back-to-back games with promotions rivals Plymouth and Ipswich, the Owls now face an S6 double-header.

Morecambe and MK Dons travel to Hillsborough this week, with the Shrimps up first on Tuesday night.

Derek Adams’ side have been strong at home while struggling on the road this season.

Our visitors head into the midweek clash in the relegation zone, a point behind MK Dons but with a game in hand.

In a tense basement battle over the weekend, Morecambe rescued a point in the final minute against relegation rivals Forest Green Rovers, with Cole Stockton on target at the last.

Wednesday kept our unbeaten league run alive by drawing 2-2 at Portman Road on Saturday.

Darren Moore has overseen his side go 17 games without defeat and a win could send the Owls back to the top of the table.

Wednesday: There were no further injuries reported following our draw with Ipswich.

The gaffer is hopeful that Owls quartet Lee Gregory (illness), Jack Hunt (dead leg), Mallik Wilks (calf) and Reece James (ankle) can become options.

Moore said: “Hopefully on Tuesday we will have two or three back. To lose those four players on the eve of the Ipswich game was a blow as they were definitely going to be in the squad.”

Callum Paterson is set for a stint on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, though Moore issued positive news over the weekend that the Scot will not require surgery.

Morecambe: Jake Taylor and Max Melbourne have returned to training.

The Shrimps duo have not featured since December.

Ryan Cooney was substituted in the 1-1 draw with Forest Green due to injury and is a doubt for the trip to Hillsborough.

Striker Courtney Duffus is yet to feature this season with a knee ligament injury but has returned to full contact training. The former Everton man will not feature at Hillsborough and remains several weeks away.

Tickets remain available at Hillsborough for the Owls v the Shrimps and start from £19 for adult Owls Members.

Report | Wednesday 3-0 Morecambe

14 February 2023

Wednesday beat Morecambe 3-0, extended our unbeaten league run to 18 games and broke a club record in the process.

A first minute goal from Barry Bannan set the ball rolling and Josh Windass fired a brace to wrap up a comfortable home win.

But the credit is shared around the squad as 18 clean sheets for the season mirrors the run of resistance, representing the highest number of shutouts in club history.

Cameron Dawson will have tougher assignments for sure as the relegation-threatened Shrimps barely laid a glove on his side.

Only once was Dawson called into real action as Wednesday put down a marker almost from kick-off.

George Byers pulled a low feed back from the byline and Bannan was on hand to calmly slot past Connor Ripley from just inside the box.

The Owls went on to dominate, pinning the visitors into their own half and on 21 minutes the advantage doubled.

Bannan played a delicious ball inside the left channel to Marvin Johnson, who crossed low and Michael Smith flicked on for Windass to tap home.

Morecambe had only a rare foray into the final third and on one of the few occasions they did, Dawson was alert to keep out a fierce hit from Michael Mellon.

The game soon reverted to type as the Owls pumped numbers forward, giving the Lancashire outfit little alternative but to soak up the pressure.

And with Bannan in imperious form, controlling the contest across the engine room, the Shrimps welcomed the half time whistle to take respite from the one-way traffic.

And they did come out for the second period with more drive, stroking the ball around in part with more purpose.

But with Dawson untroubled, the danger was conceding again, which Morecambe almost did when Bannan was narrowly off target with a curling shot from distance that whistled wide.

There was no stopping Wednesday, though, and Windass concluded matters three minutes from time, emphatically finishing a Fisayo Dele-Bashiru cross from six yards to double his tally.

Wednesday: Dawson, Adeniran, Palmer, Flint, Famewo, Vaulks, Bannan (Bakinson 76), Byers (Dele-Bashiru 46), Johnson, Windass, Smith (Shipston 89)
