Report | Wycombe 0-1 Wednesday

14 January 2023

Will Vaulks will rightly take the headlines for his stunning match-winning goal that earned Wednesday a priceless three points at Wycombe.

But this was a hard-fought victory in every sense, the kind on which successful seasons are built.

To a man, the Owls were determined, dogged and desperate to extend the run of resistance that now moves to 14 games.

Two more big names were added to the injury list in George Byers and Reece James but Vaulks’ moment of brilliance laid the foundation for a win against one of the in-form teams in the division.

After Cameron Dawson beat out a Lewis Wing snapshot inside three minutes, the contest was a tight affair with no real action of note.

That was until 13 minutes in when Vaulks took centre stage. Little seemed on when the former Cardiff man took possession 30 yards out but Vaulks casually looked up, took a stride forward, and executed an unstoppable hit that curled out of Max Stryjek’s reach into the top corner.

That was the catalyst for a commanding first half Owls performance. Vaulks turned provider on the half-hour mark, delivering into the box for Byers to glance past the post.

Moments later, Wycombe had Stryjek to thank for keeping the score at 1-0. Josh Windass picked out Callum Paterson at the back stick, the shot was true, but the Pole did well to block.

With half time on the horizon, everything was going Wednesday’s way, but they were dealt the first of two blows to mar the win.

Byers went to ground and what initially seemed innocuous soon became more serious. After lengthy treatment, the influential midfielder left the field on a stretcher.

But Wednesday were undaunted and Windass brought a fine set piece save from Stryjek a minute into the second half.

The Chairboys started to show a little more intensity as they sought a route back into the game.

Possession increased towards the hosts and the Owls spent more time in their own half, albeit looking dangerous on the counter.

Jack Grimmer sent a 25-yarder over the bar and that was as good as it got for Wanderers.

At the other end meanwhile, Wednesday asked a question almost every time they entered Wycombe territory.

Lee Gregory, on from the bench, found Windass with a fine crossfield pass and the latter struck hard and low on the angle only for Stryjek to save with his legs.

Vaulks slammed wide from the edge of the box before the visitors suffered a second bout of ill fortune in the dying stages as James, landing awkwardly from an aerial challenge, followed Byers off on a stretcher.

The on-loan Blackpool man, like Byers, seemed to fall innocuously, but enough to see the physios and referee signal for immediate assistance.

So a concerning afternoon on the injury front, but the quest for promotion continues in admirable fashion as Wednesday strengthened their grip on a top-two slot.

Wednesday: Dawson, Hunt, Palmer, Iorfa, Famewo, James (Johnson 86), Vaulks, Byers (Bakinson 45), Windass, Paterson, Smith (Gregory 67)
