Match preview: FGR v Wednesday

25 March 2023

Forest Green v Wednesday
Sunday 26 March
1:00pm
League One
The New Lawn

THE MATCH

It’s another fixture in front of the Sky Sports cameras as Wednesday head to League One strugglers Forest Green Rovers.

The Owls will be aiming to respond after a rare defeat for Darren Moore’s side in the third tier.

Wednesday went down 4-2 in a pulsating South Yorkshire derby at Barnsley – the club’s first defeat in almost six months.

The squad have regrouped at Middlewood Road and are ready to go again on Sunday lunchtime at The New Lawn.

For Forest Green, it’s been an extremely difficult campaign in League One following their League Two title-winning season in 2021/22.

Now 13 points adrift of safety, rooted to the bottom of the table and 16 without a win, relegation seems difficult to avoid.

But manager Duncan Ferguson will be looking for a strong as possible climax to the season from his troops and a performance in the midday televised clash against Wednesday.

TEAM NEWS

Wednesday: The Owls have no fresh injury concerns following the clash with Barnsley in midweek.

George Byers (muscle) and Josh Windass (ankle) will miss out, while Mallik Wilks could return to the squad.

Wednesday will have one final training session at Middlewood Road on Saturday before departing for Gloucestershire and should Wilks come through that unscathed, the forward will be in the matchday squad.

Callum Paterson continues to make good progress and is edging closer though will not be involved on Sunday.

Forest Green: Corey O'Keeffe will serve the first of a two-match ban after picking up his 10th yellow card of the season against Plymouth last week.

Olly Casey will serve the final game of his three-match suspension following a recent red card at Accrington.

Ben Stevenson (knee) is ruled out.

Tyler Onyango, Charlie McCann, Jahmari Clarke and Baily Cargill are all likely to be sidelined until the end of the season.

Match Reports

Report | Forest Green 1-0 Wednesday

26 March 2023

The Owls slipped to a 1-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Forest Green Rovers following an under-par performance at the New Lawn.

Jordon Garrick’s goal decided a game in which Wednesday never really got going and despite having the majority of possession couldn’t make it count.

Indeed, the Owls dominated from the first whistle but might have been behind from Rovers’ first attack.

52.jpg

Marvin Johnson and Michael Smith had half chances before Cameron Dawson – making his 100th SWFC appearance – atoned for a loose pass pounced upon by Kyle McAllister to thwart Charlie Savage from close range.

The contest reverted to type, with Wednesday having all of the ball and the hosts relying on the counter – which they maximised on 35 minutes.

Dom Bernard motored into space down the right and crossed low for Garrick to slot home at the near post.

53.jpg

The remainder of the first half offered little in terms of incident nor real openings and the Owls were in need of a boost after the break.

Rovers had other ideas, though, and Dawson came to the rescue, getting the merest of touches to divert a McAllister effort after the midfielder slalomed across the 18-yard line.

Wednesday made a double change on the hour, introducing Will Vaulks and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and they did pick up the pace.

55.jpg

Lee Gregory had a goal-bound stab deflected wide, Liam Palmer forced a decent save from Ross Doohan and Will Vaulks saw a low drive whistle past the post.

But with Forest Green pinned in their own half and defending deep, that was about as good as it got for the Owls, who must pick themselves up for a second quickfire visit to Gloucestershire against Cheltenham in midweek.

Wednesday: Dawson, Palmer, Iorfa (Hunt 46), Flint, James (Famewo 80), Bakinson (Dele-Bashiru 64), Adeniran (Vaulks 64), Bannan, Johnson, Smith, Gregory
