Report | Wednesday 1-0 Peterborough

4 March 2023

Wednesday extended their unbeaten league run to 21 games and more importantly posted three more crucial points with a 1-0 win over Peterborough.

The Posh proved a tough nut to crack but Jaden Brown did the damage right on the hour.

Brown made his first start in four months at Charlton last weekend and more than impressed but his contribution from this contest left an indelible mark.

Peterborough came to play, as they evidenced through a first half in which patience was the order of the day for the Owls.

The visitors saw plenty of the ball, playing with an air of confidence, and a low feed from Ephron Mason-Clark caused concern but there was no Posh player on the end to apply the finish.

Wednesday probed and had to wait until 25 minutes in to knock on the door - that almost came off its hinges.

A stylish corner routine saw Barry Bannan tee up Josh Windass and the shot was as true as you like only to crash against the crossbar.

The Owls upped the ante after the break and Peterborough twice had Will Norris to thank for keeping the score goalless inside a minute.

First the keeper did well to beat out an Aden Flint header, then Norris gratefully gathered a Windass snapshot.

Wednesday won a flurry of corners as the visitors were pinned into their own box and the pressure finally told on 60 minutes.

Bannan played a delightful trademark ball that cut through the backline to Brown on the angle and the defender’s low hit crept past Norris with the aid of a deflection.

The decibel levels soared as Brown then excelled at the other end, executing a perfectly timed challenge to thwart Kwame Poku, who burst in on goal from a rare Posh attack.

That was Brown’s final act before he left the action near the end to a standing ovation, his race was run, and his side stayed on course for promotion.

Wednesday: Dawson, Palmer (Adeniran 90+5), Iorfa, Flint, Famewo, Brown (Hunt 78), Vaulks, Bannan, Byers, Windass, Smith (Gregory 68)
