Report: Wednesday 3-1 Wycombe

24 September 2022

An incident-packed first half was the foundation for Wednesday overcoming Wycombe 3-1 at Hillsborough.

A Joe Jacobson own goal gave the Owls an early lead before Sam Vokes promptly equalised

Barry Bannan restored the advantage and Callum Paterson came off the bench to score on his 100th SWFC appearance with the last kick of the game.

Wednesday made a dream start, finding a way through in the very first minute. Marvin Johnson delivered the most exquisite of crosses from wide left and as Michael Smith waited to pounce at the far post, Jacobson could only slide past his own goalkeeper.

Former Chairboys shot-stopper David Stockdale was immediately called into action at the other end as Wycombe almost fashioned the ideal response.

A corner was cleared only as far as Dominic Gape on the edge of the area, the shot was true through a sea of bodies and Stockdale sprung low to divert the danger.

But the visitors went one better on nine minutes to level. Anis Mehmeti slalomed past two challenges along the byline and pulled back for Vokes to smash into the Kop net.

Back came Wednesday and after a wave of attacks, Will Vaulks brought the best out of Max Stryjek, who spectacularly tipped the long ranger over the crossbar.

The dominance paid off as the Owls went 2-1 up on 32 minutes. A swift move upfield began from a Wycombe set piece as Wednesday poured numbers forward on the break and Smith rolled an unplayable ball inside the six-yard box that left Bannan with the simple task of stroking home.

It could have been worse for Wanderers just before the break when Josh Windass played a defence-splitting give and go with Bannan but was thwarted by a smart Stryjek save.

The one-way traffic continued into the second half but it was Wycombe who carved the first clear cut chance and Jason McCarthy might have done better after finding space in the danger zone but headed over the top.

The Owls got back in the driving seat and pressed Wanderers into their own half as the second period unfolded.

A flurry of corners threatened a third goal, which would have put the lingering threat of a second equaliser to bed, and with time running out Wycombe had to push further up the pitch, leaving space at the back.

The Owls duly capitalised in stoppage time, with Paterson slotting in Mallik Wilks’ feed to score with his first touch and mark a milestone afternoon in style.

Wednesday: Stockdale, Palmer, Ihiekwe, Heneghan, James, Vaulks, Bannan (Paterson 90), Johnson, Windass (Bakinson 89), Gregory (Wilks 80), Smith
