Report | Wednesday 3-1 Blackburn

2 December 2023

The Owls turned in their most impressive home performance of the season to beat Blackburn 3-1 at Hillsborough.

Bailey Cadamarteri scored his maiden senior goal that was cancelled out by the Championship’s leading scorer Sammie Szmodics.

But the hosts hit back and Marvin Johnson marked his 100th appearance with a strike to restore the lead.

And with Rovers chasing the game, Josh Windass delivered a late third to seal a vital victory.

It was a bittersweet opening to the game for the Owls as Dominic Iorfa lasted less than a minute before pulling up with injury, meaning an early introduction for Liam Palmer.

But inside five minutes, Wednesday were a goal to the good. Windass, back from suspension, broke down the left flank and delivered a low feed for Cadamarteri to smash high into the net.

Windass then took centre stage himself, twice going close. First the forward drilled in a fierce hit that Leopold Wahlstedt parried to safety before unleashing a piledriver that Sondre Tronstad bravely headed clear.

The football flowed in a high-tempo contest. Wahlstedt was called into action again to deny George Byers at his near post and Blackburn finished an entertaining first half with a flourish.

Bambo Diaby made a key intervention to prevent Hayden Carter levelling 10 yards out after Di’Shon Bernard cut out Szmodics’ dangerous cross with three onrushing Rovers ready to pounce.

The Owls looked to resume control in the second half and the lively Cadamarteri was thwarted by Wahlstedt.

But it was Blackburn that flexed their muscle, enjoying extended periods of possession.

And on 65 minutes, Szmodics made his mark. James Hill raced down the right to send over an inviting cross that the Rovers marksman duly headed home.

Blackburn’s joy, though, was short-lived. With 12 minutes to go, Johnson motored down the left side of the penalty area and looked up to plant a whistling drive across Wahlstedt and in.

The visitors piled bodies forward in search of a second leveller but it was Wednesday that had the final say.

The threat appeared to be in Blackburn’s favour as they won a last-minute corner but the flag-kick was cleared and Windass sprinted free from his own half to keep his nerve, drill past Wahlstedt, and put the game out of reach.

Wednesday: Dawson, Iorfa (Palmer 2), Diaby, Bernard, Famewo (Ihiekwe 76), Vaulks, Byers (Johnson 46)/, Bannan (Hendrick 87), Windass, Paterson, Cadamarteri (Musaba 76)
