Windass nets in pre-season opener

Wednesday eased into pre-season action with a 1-1 draw at National League side York.

The friendly marked the beginning of the Xisco Muñoz era as the new Wednesday manager effectively fielded two separate teams either side of half time.

The Owls dominated the first half, stroking the ball confidently around the plush LNER Community Stadium pitch.

Dominic Iorfa went close with a towering header and Lee Gregory forced a fine save from Ryan Whitley after breaking free down the left of the area.

Wednesday were not to be denied and broke through on 26 minutes. Adam Crookes’ backpass was underhit and misdirected, allowing Josh Windass to nip in and round Whitley to score.

The hosts were limited to just one chance before the break when Lenell John-Lewis was inches off target from just outside the box.

The Owls made eight changes for the start of the second period and a further three on the hour.

Cameron Dawson stayed between the sticks for the restart before making way for Pierce Charles and in-between made a smart save to keep out Scott Burgess’ set piece.

The Minstermen posed more of a threat in the second half and got their reward on 59 minutes. A swift counter down the left saw Maz Kouhyar’s low cross converted at the far post by Finlay Barnes to give York an overall deserved share of the spoils.

Additional York tickets on sale

29 June 2023

The Owls have received an additional 1,000 tickets for our pre-season friendly with York.

Wednesday travel to the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday 8 July.

Our original allocation of 2,000 tickets sold out on the first day of sales on Monday.

The additional allocation is on sale now to 2023/24 Season Ticket holders.

Subject to availability, tickets will go to general sale on Tuesday.

Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Office, online or by telephone on 03700 201867 (option 1 - £2 booking fee per ticket).

Please note as this is a friendly, Ticket Priority Points will not be used or applied for this fixture.
