Report: Wednesday 2-0 Rotherham

29 October 2023

It was a long time coming but worth the wait as Wednesday posted their first win of the season alongside the best performance.

The derby with Rotherham finished 2-0 - former Millers striker Michael Smith netting twice in a one-sided first half - a scoreline that in all honesty flattered the visitors, who were under the cosh from the start.

The Owls took just 11 minutes to break through, which preceded a scintillating display before half time.

Barry Bannan pierced the defence with a trademark feed to Anthony Musaba and the Dutchman was denied by Viktor Johansson at his near post. But Musaba was alert to stab the rebound back across goal and Smith stabbed home from close range.

Smith was in the mood and a whisker away from getting purchase on a delicious Josh Windass delivery.

George Byers was then presented with a sight on goal when Johansson spilled a looping Bannan cross but the midfielder’s shot was too high.

Wednesday were irresistible, launching wave after wave of attacks - Windass freed Musaba down the left and this time Johansson got his angles right to gather at the second attempt.

Windass skewed off target from another Musaba assist before playing a key role in the second goal on 36 minutes.

An unplayable ball to the outstanding Musaba cut the rearguard open once more and the pass to Smith was clinically finished from six yards.

Musaba might have rounded off an outstanding first half performance with a goal but, unmarked at the back stick, misjudged a header that bounced over the bar.

It almost worsened for Rotherham moments into the second period when Windass improvised on the volley from all of 45 yards and Johansson was relieved to see the ball land narrowly wide.

The Millers had, and spurned, their best chance of the whole game as substitute Sebastian Revan blazed over the top and Smith nearly punished that profligacy, firing across Johansson but inches past the post.

Try as they might, Rotherham could not fashion a route back and Wednesday entered the closing stages with that maiden win squarely in sight.

And although a third goal never arrived, victory did, as Danny Röhl marked his first home game with three points and a marker laid on the road to recovery.

Wednesday: Dawson, Iorfa, Bernard, Diaby, James, Byers (Vaulks 63), Bannan, Musaba (Buckley 73), Paterson (Valentin 79), Windass (Gassama 79), Smith
