Report: Swansea 3-0 Wednesday

23 September 2023

Wednesday went down 3-0 to Swansea on an afternoon to forget in South Wales.

Jamal Lowe laid the foundation for victory with a first half penalty before strikes after the break from substitute Jerry Yates and Charlie Patino.

The Owls impressed in flashes but were undone by the spot-kick, after which the home side took grip of the game.

A feisty encounter at times was a slow burner, with Wednesday edging the early exchanges, moving forward with purpose and pushing the Swans on the back foot.

A smart save from Carl Rushforth prevented Lee Gregory making a breakthrough but the Owls were caught on the counter just before the half-hour mark.

Josh Ginnelly broke away from Pol Valentin in the box before slumping to the floor and the referee pointed to the spot.

Lowe stepped up and sent Devis Vasquez the wrong way with a crisp penalty high into the net.

It was harsh on Wednesday, who certainly looked the more likely but the goal changed the course of the contest.

Swansea started to play with confidence and thought they were heading into half time two goals to the good.

Vasquez saved well from Lowe, the loose ball fell to the advancing Liam Cullen, who slotted home but a raised flag ruled the goal out.

The Owls came out fighting in the second half, bossing possession and again forcing Swansea into retreat.

Then a remarkable passage of play unfolded inside a minute - first Bambo Diaby rattled the woodwork with a fierce close range shot before Vasquez crashed a clearance into Patino at the other end and was relieved to see the ball roll past the post.

But there was no respite for Wednesday and Swansea doubled their lead on 64 minutes.

Lowe found space down the left of the area, pulled back for Yates and the sidefoot from 12 yards was academic.

It went from bad to worse six minutes later when Patino was sent scampering through on goal by Lowe and deftly chipped over the advancing Vasquez.

Gregory was denied a consolation as Ben Cabango bravely got a crucial touch to a bullet strike but that was as good as it got for the Owls, who were ultimately well beaten.

Wednesday: Vasquez, Valentin (Fletcher 69), B Diaby, Bernard, Famewo, Delgado (Windass 54), Bannan, Hendrick Byers 77), Buckley (Paterson 54), Musaba, Gregory (Smith 69)
