18s round off the season in style

25 April 2018

The Owls Under-18s rounded off their season with a comprehensive victory over Huddersfield at PPG Canalside on Tuesday.

After a strong season for Wednesday, Ben Wilkinson’s side secured third spot in the table, just outside of the play-off positions.

But the Owls can reflect on another positive season at youth level, that has seen the club win their final five games of the season, and in some style.

The season finale saw Wednesday defeat Huddersfield 10-1 away from home, adding to the recent victories over Cardiff (5-0), Ipswich (0-1), Millwall (3-1) and Birmingham (1-5).

Under-18s’ top scorer Ben Hughes set the tone for the game, heading home after just three minutes from Alex Hunt’s corner.

Against a Terriers side made up of trialists and Under-16s, Wednesday were relentless and overpowered their Yorkshire rivals, racing into a 5-0 lead at the break.

Iyad Hamud, Hughes (2), Jordan O’Brien and Layton Swaine all on target.

There was no let up after the interval and following a smart save from Owls goalkeeper Luke Jackson to deny Darnell Mintus, the visitors registered their sixth goal just before the hour.

Isaac Rice’s looping header from Luke Hall’s corner opened the floodgates once again just before the hour, with O’Brien and Layton Swaine adding a seventh and eighth on 61 and 69 minutes.

Huddersfield pulled one back 18 minutes from time through Remi Thompson but a special strike from Hamud and O’Brien’s hat-trick goal in the final minute made it 10-1 in the final action of the game.

Owls: Jackson, Dawodu, Ellery, Grant, Rice, Brennan (Reaney 46), Hughes (Hall 46), Hunt (Kenyon 67), Swaine, Hamud, O’Brien
