The Owls Under-18s maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-2 draw away at Crewe on Saturday.
A notoriously difficult place to travel, there was a sense of frustration for the in-form Owls who led 2-0 at the break with Liam Shaw notching both in a strong first half display.
But having halved the deficit on the hour, Crewe snatched a point right at the last converting a 95th minute penalty.
Wednesday took the initiative in the 23rd minute when Declan Thompson slid the ball through for Jordan O’Brien, who drilled in a low cross to the back post for Shaw to tap home.
The visitors’ high pressing game was effective and so it proved ten minutes from the break when Eyad Hammoud won the ball back high up the pitch, leading to a second goal.
The forward centred for Charles Hagan, who unselfishly nodded back across goal for Shaw to register his second of the game.
But the hosts gained a foothold in the game on 63 minutes and it was heartache at the last for Wednesday.
Shaw was adjudged to have brought down his man in the box, the referee pointed to the spot and Crewe levelled from 12 yards with the final kick of the game.
Wednesday remain unbeaten this season, are top of the table and next in action on Saturday 6 October at home to Bolton (11am).
Owls: Render, Dawodu (Farmer 64), Ellery (Oliver 89), Kenyon, Reaney, Rice, Hagan, Thompson, Hammoud (Vasalo 80), Shaw, O’Brien
