U18s report: Leeds 1-4 Owls

3 February 2020

Following the disappointment of the FA Youth Cup exit on penalties against Leeds last month, the Owls Under-18s put that result to bed on Saturday.

Wednesday turned in an impressive display to overcome the Whites 4-1 on the road and record their first league win since November.

The Owls fell behind in the 17th minute as a looping header found its way past Luke Jackson but that lead lasted only two minutes before the visitors levelled.

Paulo Aguas drove down the left and fired a low ball into the box that was deflected into the net via a Leeds defender.

Then eight second half minutes saw the Owls move into a commanding position.

Three minutes after the restart, Elliott Vasalo’s corner towards the near post was headed home by Charlie Reaney, with Leeds defenders on the line unable to keep the ball out.

Wednesday then grabbed a third in the 53rd minute when there seemed little danger for the hosts.

With the Whites in possession at the back, Declan Thompson read an attempted pass into the midfield, made the interception and slotted home from the edge of the box.

And Thompson smashed home his second of the game from the penalty spot with 20 minutes left on the clock to make sure of the points.

Lewis Farmer swung the ball in from the corner, Reaney was unfairly brought down in the box and Thompson sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the resulting penalty.

Next up for the Owls is a home clash against league leaders Wigan on Saturday (11.00am).

Owls: Jackson, Farmer, Ellery, Glover (Kenyon 61), Thompson, Cox, Zottos (Hall 74), Reaney, Vasalo, Trueman (Bonnington 35), Aguas
