Wednesday suffered late heartbreak as Crewe equalised to complete a 2-2 draw with minutes to spare at Middlewood Road.

After falling behind in the first half to a Charlie Finney strike, the young Owls started the second period superbly and goals from Cian Flannery and Corey Glaves fashioned a 2-1 lead which remained until the 90th minute.

But the Alex hit back at the last through Kyle Stubbs to take a point back over the Pennines.In the first minute Joel Tabiner had a great effort that sailed over Jack Hall’s goal and set the tone for an entertaining game.

The opening third was an even affair with both sides having chances. The most notable for Wednesday came from trialist Brandon Ntoku but Crewe goalkeeper Tom Booth was up to the challenge as he parried the shot away from goal.

The deadlock was broken in the 36th minute as Finney exquisitely curled the ball into the top corner, leaving Hall with no chance.

The hosts responded well after going a goal down and four minutes before half time star performer Glaves travelled at the Alex defence before feeding Ntoku, who couldn’t provide the finish.

The second half was controlled by Wednesday and the equaliser came just three minutes in. Paulo Aguas’ corner was floated in with Glaves leaping to win the first header, gifting centre half partner Flannery the opportunity to sweep home on the bounce from close range.

The second arrived 12 minutes later. Again, following Aguas’ corner, Glaves was first to the ball and this time he was the finisher not provider, intricately flicking a low cross into the bottom corner, giving the Owls a deserved lead.

Hall made a clutch of important saves in an attempt to preserve the advantage but an onslaught from Crewe in the closing stages was too strong.

And with almost the last kick of the game, the visitors levelled. Following a succession of free kicks in Wednesday territory, Connor Salisbury bombed down the right and aimed his cross to the back post where Stubbs headed past Hall.

Focus will now turn to Saturday as Wednesday face Sheffield United at home in the Steel City derby.
