Sheffield Wednesday Under-18s made it three wins on the bounce on Saturday lunchtime with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Hull City at Middlewood Road.
It was another impressive team performance, but the headlines belonged to young striker and captain Alex Bonnington who scored all three for Wednesday to claim the match ball.
Wednesday took an early lead at Middlewood when Bonnington scored his first after just three minutes.
The visitors could not handle the Owls’ early pressure and were punished when Charlie Curtis picked up a loose ball on the right and squared to Bonnington for a neat finish inside the six-yard box.
Bonnington doubled his and the Owls’ tally on 38 minutes with Paulo Aguas taking plenty of credit for his role in the build-up.
A switch of play from Corey Glaves picked out Aguas on the left and the youngster’s first touch was superb to round his marker before driving a shot on target which was parried only as far as Bonnington to fire home on the rebound.
Wednesday more than deserved their two-goal lead and as the clock ticked down, there was little doubt the three points would be staying in S6.
But with Bonnington on a hat-trick, the striker was intent on a rounding off a good day at the office by completing the treble and made it a reality in stoppage time.
Jay Glover swung in the cross from the right after excellent wing play from Basile Zottos and Bonnington was there in the middle to meet the delivery on the volley to seal the win, three points and hat-trick.
Owls: Hare, Curtis, Glover, Glaves, Yates, Zottos, Kilheeney, Al-Jahadhmy (Asfha 74), Trueman (Davidson 87), Aguas (Sesay 90), Bonnington (c)
