U18s: Barnsley 1-1 Owls

20 September 2020

The Owls’ Under-18s emerged from a one-sided derby at Barnsley with a 1-1 draw on Saturday morning.

A dominant first half performance, with 13 shots on the Tykes’ goal, should have laid the foundation for victory but chances went astray, allowing the much improved hosts back into the game after the break.

Wednesday started and finished the opening period on the front foot, peppering the Barnsley defence from all areas.

Alex Bonnington was sent through by Basile Zottos but the keeper won the day.

The visitors continued to press and were rewarded just before the break. A slick move caused problems in the Barnsley rearguard that failed to clear its lines and Leojo Davidson fired home from distance.

The Reds regrouped for the second half but failed to cause any real concern in the final third. And the Owls almost profited when Luke Hall went close with a fierce drive.

But Wednesday were hit by a sucker punch with just two minutes to go. Faud Sesay was adjudged to have tripped his man in the box and Joe Ackroyd slammed the penalty home to rescue a point.

Wednesday: Hare, Davidson, Sesay, Glaves, Ashman, Yates, Zottos (Hall 60), Glover, Bonnington, Trueman (Ahsfa 82), Aguas
