U18 report: Colchester v Wednesday

21 August 2021

The Owls Under-18s were handed their first defeat of the season by Colchester on Saturday.

The Wednesday youngsters went down 4-0 at Florence Park in the 11.00am kick-off.

Following the boys’ opening day 1-0 win over Ipswich, Wednesday headed to Essex looking to build on that positive display but found themselves a goal down after 17 minutes.

Fuad Sesay inadvertently directed an inswinging corner past goalkeeper Jack Hall to give the hosts a one-goal lead at the break.

Colchester skipper Ryan Lowe doubled the lead two minutes after the restart by rounding Hall and slotting into an unguarded net and the game was well and truly put to bed just before the hour mark.

Taizo Marcel-Dilaver pounced on a loose backpass and shifted the ball wide of Hall before slamming home the third from close range.

The U’s made it 4-0 in stoppage time as Kaan Bennett prodded home a yard from the goalline from a neatly worked short corner.

Wednesday host QPR next Saturday.

Owls: Hall, Phuthi, Maltby, Flannery, Sesay, Al-Jahadhmy (Maciag 60), Shipston, Asfha (Yogane 72), Kilheeney (Tapudzai 36), Cadamarteri, Davidson
