The boys are buzzing in the dressing room!

9 December 2021

The Owls Under-18s defied the odds to emerge triumphant from their FA Youth Cup third round clash at Southampton.

Having been drawn away at a Premier League club and Category One academy, the Owls headed into the tie as underdogs but a 77th minute winner from Bailey Cadamarteri sealed a superb win for Wednesday.

There were fantastic scenes as the referee sounded the full time whistle as the Wednesday boys registered a stunning victory at St Mary’s against the renowned Saints academy.

The Owls will host Preston in round four at Hillsborough.

Andy Holdsworth told swfc.co.uk: “As you can imagine, the boys are buzzing in there!

“They are singing songs, they are bouncing, they are delighted with what they have achieved – it’s a fantastic result.

“The players have worked their socks off and carried out the gameplan.

“Every member of staff is so proud, myself, Steven Haslam, Andy Sharp, Nicky Weaver, Dan Crompton, the list goes on because everyone has worked so hard.

“I said earlier today, you don’t want these moments to pass you by, you have to go out and fight for it and fair play to them. They’ve come up against a Category One side, a Premier League club, it’s been a long two days, we’ve travelled, stayed overnight, worked hard down here and there is the reward.”

As mentioned above, for the first time in the competition this season, the Owls have a home tie up next against Preston.

“We’re pleased to be at home,” Holdsworth added. “Again, it’s something different for the lads, they will have more friends, more family there and some of them have never played at Hillsborough before.

“But we have a few league games before then so there is lots to work in from until the New Year when we play that game.”

Owls: Hall, Fusire, Ashman, Maltby, Flannery, Sesay, Asfha, Kilheeney, Al-Jahadhmy (Holland 90), Shipston (Thornton 85), Cadamarteri
