Under-18s edged out by Wigan

28 January 2023

The Owls’ Under-18s went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Wigan at Christopher Park.

The decisive goal came as early as the fifth minute and despite throwing bodies forward in pursuit of an equaliser, Wednesday just fell short of breaking through.

It was Kyle Worsley who took the plaudits for the hosts. The striker took a fine ball into his stride down the right channel and cut inside to curl an unstoppable hit past Jack Hall.

The Owls responded with Jarvis Thornton forcing a fine save from Matthew Corran, then Wigan countered with Sam Gill flashing wide.

Wednesday introduced Danai Rhule at the break and the tricky forward almost made an immediate impression, finding space in the box but shooting wide of the upright.

Rhule was sent scampering through following a huge Hall clearance and keeper counterpart Corran comfortably saved.

The Latics’ custodian excelled on the hour, though, somehow keeping out Devlan Moses’ point-blank header when the latter was favourite to score.

The last chance of the game came with 10 minutes to go, with Ernie Weaver powering a corner over the crossbar, and the hosts held out for victory.

Wednesday: Hall, Bradford, Flannery, Weaver, Chapman (Bobea 74), Tapudzai, Phuthi, Triornton, Moses (Trialist 68), Maciag, Johnson (Rhule 45)
