Owls denied in derby drama

30 September 2022

The Owls Under-18s emerged from league leaders Barnsley with a deserved point that on another day might have been all three.

But Andy Holdsworth’s side came up against a goalkeeper in inspired form as the visitors were kept at bay right to the last by Rogan Ravenhill.

The Tyles’ custodian enjoyed a memorable evening and few would have denied Wednesday the win in the final analysis.

After flying out of the traps and applying the early pressure, Ravenhill twice came to the Reds’ rescue.

A super save thwarted Joey Phuthi inside the penalty area before the keeper expertly got vital fingertips to a Sean Fusire drive from distance.

Barnsley were limited to one half chance in the opening period, close to half time, when Charlie Hickingbottom headed a corner over the crossbar.

Piece Charles was called into action soon after the restart, holding on to a fierce shot from Leo Farrell.

The derby developed into an even affair as the second half unfolded, with much of the play taking place in a congested midfield.

That theme extended to the closing stages when a stalemate seemed certain but Wednesday came so close to victory in the dying embers.

Star man Ravenhill saved spectacularly from Jake Bradford and moments later was relieved to see a Rio Shipston snapshot cannon back off the crossbar to safety.

Wednesday: Charles, Rodrigues, Maltby, Chapman, Flannery, Phuthi, Shipston, Tapudzai, Thornton (Bradford 73), Fusire, Moses (Cadamarteri 64)
