U18 report | Owls 0-1 Peterborough

23 September 2022

The Owls Under-18s were edged out 1-0 by Peterborough at Middlewood Road on Friday afternoon.

Wednesday carved several openings but just lacked the cutting edge to take advantage, with Posh holding onto their slender lead after Joel Odei-Larbi’s first half goal.

Owls wing back Joey Phuthi had a lively afternoon and almost teed up Devlan Moses for the opener on 30 minutes, but his low cross was poked wide by the striker.

Phuthi beat his marker once more on the right flank and fired across goal, but the ball somehow evaded attackers and defenders and drifted wide.

Wednesday goalkeeper Jack Phillips spent the entire first half untested, but the visitors then took the lead with their first attempt of the game.

Dennis Kelmendi found space on the right and crossed low for Odei-Larbi who tapped the ball home moments before the referee blew for half time.

Rio Shipston was first to test Jake West in the second period, the midfielder’s powerful free kick was saved well by the Posh shot-stopper.

Joseph Toynton came inches away from doubling the visitors’ lead when the defender met Ben Challinor’s cross, but his header rattled the woodwork before the Owls cleared.

Phuthi proved a constant thorn in Peterborough’s side and sent another low cross in from the right, which was cleared into the path of Shipston, but his sweet connection deflected wide.

As the clock ticked down there was still time for the tricky Phuthi to create one more opportunity, but Tafadzwa Tapudzai’s volley flew wide after the winger sent in a teasing cross from the right.

Wednesday: Phillips, Phuthi, Maltby (Dawes 43), Johnson, Chapman, Tapudzai, Shipston, Fernandes (Bobea 76), Thornton, Moses, Maciag (Rhule 65)
