Under-23s pegged back at the last

10 December 2018

The Owls Under-23s suffered a late double blow as they drew 2-2 with Crewe Alexandra on Monday afternoon.

Wednesday conceded twice in added time over the Pennines after George Boyd and Ben Hughes had put the visitors in front.

It was a cruel blow for the Owls, who seemingly had three points wrapped up heading into the final minutes.

Wednesday had started the contest well too as Ciaran Brennan had a header cleared off the line before Jack Stobbs curled a shot just wide of the Railwaymen’s far post.

The Owls continued to push for the opener and in added time at the end of the first half were rewarded a penalty for shirt pulling - Boyd stepped up to convert.

Crewe came out of the traps in the second half and Billy Sass-Davies had a powerful header cleared from danger on the hour mark.

However, the Owls promptly doubled their lead when Hughes cut inside on the edge of the box and curled a stunning effort into the top corner.

Then came the grandstand finish from the hosts to leave Wednesday rueing a double stoppage time blow.

First, Crewe won a corner and up popped Lewis Reilly to head past Dan Wallis to make the score 2-1.

The home side pushed forward once more, winning another corner and sending goalkeeper Dave Richards up with the hope of grabbing the equaliser.

And it duly came, when the ball fell kindly for Richards who smashed home from six yards with the last kick of the game.
