Under-23s overcome by Addicks

12 April 2021

The Owls’ Under-23s suffered a disappointing reverse in the capital on Monday, going down 4-0 at Charlton.

After Junior Quitirna scored with a first half penalty, traffic was essentially one-way as further strikes from Charles Clayden (2) and a trialist condemned Wednesday to defeat.

On a positive note, Joost van Aken and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru posted valuable minutes on the pitch following their respective injuries.

After a relatively even opening, the Addicks took the lead on 37 minutes from the spot. Van Aken was adjudged to have felled one of the home side’s two trialists and Quitirna stepped up to comfortably dispatch the penalty.

That was the trigger for Charlton to take a grip on the game and they doubled the lead two minutes before the break.

Clayden burst forward after picking up possession from the left channel and cut inside to curl neatly into the corner of the net.

The hosts started the second half where they left the first and the contest was all but over on 54 minutes. Charlton countered from a Wednesday attack and Clayden’s shot took a big deflection off Isaac Rice to give Josh Render no chance.

The final word went to the Londoners, who made it 4-0 on 62 minutes when Charlton’s second trialist hit a first time effort that flashed across and in at the far post.

Wednesday: Render, Dawodu, Galvin, Rice, van Aken (Cox 62), Waldock, Hagan (Bonnington 73), Reaney, Hughes, Dele-Bashiru (Thompson 67), Huxley
