Waldock brace seals point for 23s

8 March 2021

Liam Waldock had the Owls Under-23s in front twice against Crewe but the home side replied as many times to earn a point on Sunday afternoon.

The draw keeps Wednesday above Crewe in the Professional Development League North table.

After a cagey start, the Owls opened the scoring after 26 minutes on the clock.

Waldock pressed the Crewe defence and won the ball close to the Railwaymen’s area, before playing a neat one-two with Charles Hagan and coolly slotting into the far corner.

Wednesday were good value for their half time lead but an action-packed second half was on the horizon.

On 52 minutes, the Alex were back on level terms when Callum Ainley’s give and go in the Owls area left him free to drill powerfully past Luke Jackson for 1-1.

Wednesday pushed to restore their lead and duly delivered 10 minutes later.

Waldock took the ball in his stride after Crewe cleared to the edge of their area and the midfielder placed clinically past Sam Booth.

Our lead was short-lived, however, as the home side were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes to go when Waldock was deemed to have brought down Ainley.

Regan Griffiths stepped up and sent Jackson the wrong way to ensure the points were shared.

Wednesday: Jackson, Thompson, Galvin, Cox, Rice (c), Brennan, Hunt, Reaney (Trueman 56), Waldock, Hagan, Huxley (Zottos 84)
