Under-23s inflict Robins reverse

11 November 2020

A convincing display in Weston-super-Mare saw the Owls Under-23s post a 2-1 win against southern league leaders Bristol City.

Korede Adedoyin and substitute Ben Hughes scored either side of a Sam Bell penalty to secure Wednesday’s second win of the season.

The visitors were first out of the traps and the early pressure was rewarded with the opening goal. Adedoyin burst in on goal and finished with some aplomb past the advancing Harvey Wiles-Richards.

The same player struck the post moments later as Wednesday made an enterprising start against a City side with only a single defeat to their name this campaign.

And the Robins duly fought back, with Josh Owers bringing a fine diving save from Luke Jackson.

Sam Pearson saw a penalty shout waved away but the referee did point to the spot midway through the first half when Vince Harper went tumbling under a challenge from Matt Penney.

Bell did the honours from the spot to haul the hosts level.

Wiles-Richards was the star of the show after the break, most notably with a super double save to thwart Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Zak Smith saw a low drive fizz wide at the other end and that was as close as City got to taking three points, which would go the way of Wednesday.

With 10 minutes to go, Hughes executed a perfect lob over Wiles-Richards and Lee Bullen’s side comfortably managed the closing stages to emerge triumphant.

Wednesday: Jackson, Dawodu, Galvin, Rice, Urhoghide, Penney, Hunt, Dele-Bashiru, Shaw (Grant 46), Hidalgo (Hughes 65), Adedoyin (Reaney 85)
