The Owls Under-23s were denied their first win of the season by a last-gasp leveller away at Coventry.

The Professional Development League clash at the CBS Arena saw the Owls take the lead after 20 minutes through Basile Zottos.

Wednesday kept the league leaders at bay right until the last when their resilience was finally broken by City striker Fabio Tavares to ensure the points were shared.

It was the Owls’ first PDL fixture since mid-September, though Lee Bullen’s side did draw 1-1 with Sheffield FC in a friendly outing last week.

The hosts began brightly as Tavares sent a shot narrowly wide inside the first minute, Josh Reid and Jonny Ngandu also spurned good chances in a lively opening before the Owls broke the deadlock.

From the edge of the box, Zottos had the beating of Sky Blues goalkeeper Ben Wilson with a neat finish on 20 minutes.

Jack Hall was called into action early in the second half when forced to punch clear from a dangerous Jordan Shipley free kick and the follow up strike from Reid was deflected wide.

The Owls settled into the second period and went close to doubling the advantage through striker Alex Bonnington.

After industrious work from Jay Glover, the midfielder picked out Bonnington 20 yards from goal, who curled his shot agonisingly wide of the far post.

Wilson then made a good save from Will Trueman on the hour moments before Shipley planted a header just wide into the side-netting in an end-to-end encounter.

The late pressure came from the home side as both Shipley and Tavares saw efforts blocked by a well-organised Owls defence and Ryan Howley nodded inches wide from a corner.

Coventry remained on the hunt for a late equaliser to preserve their unbeaten start to the campaign and got their leveller in the final minute.

Tavares fired home from inside the box off the crossbar to earn a share of the spoils for City.
