U21s earn point at Peterborough

14 February 2023

Wednesday’s Under-21s went Dutch with Peterborough United on Valentine’s Day, sharing the points with a 1-1 draw at London Road.

Cian Flannery opened the scoring for the Owls before Ricky-Jade Jones levelled soon after for the hosts.

A draw was certainly reflective of the Cambridgeshire contest, with few clearcut chances for both sides.

The opening 25 minutes went by without incident before Wednesday broke the deadlock with the first real opportunity of the game.

Leojo Davidson swung a corner to the front post where Flannery was finely poised to nod home.

Peterborough responded with Johnson Gyamfi, but Jack Hall stood firm to deny the forward when he bared down on goal.

Josh Ashman had a header cleared off the line for Wednesday before the home side restored parity.

Jones charged into the Wednesday box from deep before firing high past Hall.

Luke Cook almost put the Owls back in front but his dinked effort drifted narrowly over the crossbar.

Joe Randall had the first clear chance of the second period, his powerful low shot was stopped well by Hall.

Mackenzie Maltby forced a fine stop from William Lakin when the Owls defender met a bending cross from substitute Joey Phuthi.

Bobby Dunn curled a free kick just wide for the Owls as the clock ticked down, before Lewis Darlington blazed over at the other end to see the sides take a point each.

Wednesday | Hall, Sesay, Ashman, Flannery, Trialist, Aguas, Dunn, Maltby, Durrant (Tapudzai 80), Davidson (Phuthi 55), Cook (Moses 80)
