Two early goals from a trialist and Leojo Davidson saw Wednesday’s Under-21s emerge from Crewe with all three points.
The Alex struck the woodwork twice but could not find a way through the Owls’ resolute backline on a bleak, wet afternoon over the Pennines.
Wednesday were off to the ideal start, hitting the front inside four minutes when the trialist jinked inside onto his right from 18 yards and planted a low show across Dave Richards.
It got even better for Neil Thompson’s side just three minutes later. Bobby Dunn picked out Davidson on the edge of the box from a training ground corner routine and the striker thumped an unstoppable hit into the top corner.
Crewe sought a way back into the game but found Luke Jackson right in form between the visitors’ sticks.
Jackson denied Oli Finney, Regan Griffiths and Charlie Colkett but was relieved to see the latter’s set piece bounce back into play off the post moments before the break.
Finney brushed the roof of Jackson’s net on the hour as Crewe poured numbers forward and Harvey Washington went close with a header that flew over the top.
A frustrating afternoon was summed up for the home side in the closing stages when the lively Finney unleashed a fierce set piece from range that cannoned to safety off the crossbar.
The win was the perfect way for Wednesday to enter into an extended spell without a competitive fixture – their next scheduled encounter is Monday 9 January at Burnley.
Wednesday: Jackson, Fusire, Sesay (Aguas 88), Chapman, Adetero, Maltby, Davidson (Phuthi 82), Glover, Moses (Trialist 63), Dunn, Trialist
