Antonio signs

6 August 2012

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Michail Antonio from Premiership side Reading for an undisclosed fee.

Antonio has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Hillsborough.

The capture of the 22-year-old follows the winger’s major impact for the Owls last season on loan as Dave Jones’ side stormed to automatic promotion to the Championship.

The pacey wideman kicked off his career with the Royals in 2008 as a trainee and enjoyed loan spells with Cheltenham, Southampton, Colchester and the Owls.

He scored for the Saints in their JPT final triumph of 2010 against Carlisle and made 39 appearances for the South Coast side in all competitions, claiming seven goals.

After returning to Reading, Antonio featured on 24 occasions for the Madejski outfit in 2010/11.

Antonio was then loaned to Colchester and made 15 appearances, scoring four goals.

He joined Wednesday on a temporary deal in January 2012 and played 14 games, scoring five times as the Owls sealed second spot in League 1.

Antonio said: “I have been waiting patiently for this move all summer and I am so pleased it has gone through. Everything comes to those who wait.

“Winning promotion with Sheffield Wednesday last season was something I will never forget.

“Wednesday fans have been encouraging me all summer to sign and they have played a massive part in this move.

“I would like to say thank you to all of them and now I can focus on next season and helping Wednesday succeed in the Championship.”
