Cup matters

28 August 2012

Dave Jones has regrouped his troops ahead of cup battle against Fulham at Hillsborough tonight.

The Owls host the Cottagers in the second round of the Capital One Cup and first and foremost, Jones is pleased with a home tie.

The Wednesday boss is keeping tight-lipped on his team selection but with the games already coming thick and fast in the league, changes could be afoot.

He said:  “This is our third home game in a week and obviously, I am very pleased with the results from the first two.

“Some of the football we have played has been magnificent but as I have said before and I will continue to say, we are a work in progress.

“Any home tie in the cup must be seen as a good tie and it doesn’t really matter who you are going to play.  But Fulham are a very, very good side and they always have been since they achieved promotion to the Premier League.”

Fulham arrive at Hillsborough as an established Premier League outfit but Jones says facing a top-flight team will offer no indication as to where his own side lies in terms of standing.

He explained:  “I have been asked if this game will be a marker for where we are by playing a Premier League side and my answer to that is no, not really, because it will make no difference to when we return to playing in the league, other than if you get a result, it keeps you ticking along.

“I’ve seen teams lower in the league get good results against Premier League sides and what does it tell you? That you have beaten a Premier League side, but then you go back to the bread and butter of league football.

“It’s a change, which is nice, you don’t have the pressures of the league but there is still the pressure of wanting to win and I want my team to win every game that it plays.”
