Jones previews Baggies friendly
Dave Jones says that while his team will be out to beat Premiership side West Brom in Saturday’s pre-season friendly at Hillsborough, the result is not the be all and end all.The Owls take on the Baggies as they continue their preparations for the 2012/13 Championship campaign and the manager is anticipating a productive afternoon in S6.
He said: “It’s the latest game for us in pre-season and, of course, I would like us to beat West Brom.
“But the result isn’t everything, it’s about game time for the players and fitness levels and everything else.
“It will be a difficult game because West Brom are a Premiership team with some good, experienced players.
“But you want to pitch yourself against good players because it’s an indication of where you are.”
In terms of selection, Jones insists his starting line-up on Saturday will in no shape or form be a marker for the team that kicks off the season proper at Derby in two weeks’ time.
He added: ““There will be one or two who are on trial that we will be looking to give a run-out to.
“We are still putting things into practise from what we have been doing on the training pitch.
“The last time we played, we looked really solid but it was our third game in six days. We kept a clean sheet and that was a positive.
“We looked a little bit dull in front of goal but those three games in six days, plus travelling back from Portugal, showed the lads are fit.
“We just missed the cutting edge that day. Tomorrow, we will have had a good full week in training so we are looking for an improvement.”
