Perfect away performance

26 December 2012

Dave Jones hailed his side following what he called the ‘perfect away performance’ at Bolton on Boxing Day.

The Owls return over the Pennines with three valuable points after a disciplined and resolute performance at The Reebok Stadium and Jones said:

“I would describe that as the perfect away performance.

“We lined up with two banks of four with Michail Antonio playing just off Mamady Sidibe and Michail’s pace caused their centre halves all kind of problems.

“We were solid all over the pitch and we showed tremendous resilience.

“We limited Bolton to the odd chance and you’re always going to get that when you come to a place like this against a team just out of the Premiership.

“If I’m being picky, I think we panicked a bit in the last couple of minutes, we slashed at a few balls, but we are learning all the time.”

Jones was particularly pleased for matchwinner Mamade Sidibe, who pounced midway through the first half to settle the contest.

Sidibe extended his loan spell at Hillsborough on Christmas Eve and delivered the perfect present to the travelling fans over the Pennines.

The manager added: “I’m really pleased for Mama because he has spent a lot of time on the sidelines with injury so today is a bit of payback for him.

“He worked his socks off up there and he took his goal really well.

“It was a great cross in from Lewis Buxton because as a central defender, there is nothing you can do about a delivery like that.

“I was pleased to extend Mama’s loan deal – Tony Pulis has let us have him for another month – because he brings a lot to the table.

“He doesn’t give defenders a minute’s peace and he chases everything. He ran himself into the ground today and got his reward.

“He tired towards the end and that’s why we took him off.

“I said before the Christmas period that we will use the squad and mix things up because that’s what you have to do with the games coming thick and fast.”
