Mattock impressed by Owls in training

Owls defender Joe Mattock believes the squad have got off to a flying start in pre-season and has been impressed by the quality on the training pitch.

The 22-year-old, who penned a three-year deal with Wednesday this summer, has seen plenty to be encouraged by in the early stages of the training camp in Portugal.

He told swfc.co.uk: “The lads seem really confident and training has been at a very high standard.

“Pre-season is all about fitness and getting into shape for the new season.

“We are doing a lot of work with the ball and having games between us, so we are doing a bit of everything but the main aim is to get us fit and ready for the season.”

Wednesday are set to face Sporting Lisbon on Sunday before a meeting with Premier League new boys Reading on Tuesday (both games at the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira, kick-off 8.00pm).

And Mattock is looking forward to what he expects will be a tough workout for the squad.

He said: “It will be interesting and they will be very tough games. Sporting Lisbon are a famous club known worldwide and they will be used to this type of heat.

“It will be an experience that will benefit everyone. We’ll be playing a very strong Reading side and these types of games can only benefit the squad ahead of the new season.”

Speaking of his decision to move to S6, he concluded: “I did have other offers but one of the things that really attracted me here was how keen the club were to get me.

“If someone wants me that much to join the club then I shouldn’t turn down an offer like that. I want to be somewhere where I feel wanted and where I can play my football and I have that here.”
