Last-gasp frustration

1 April 2013

Dave Jones spoke of his disappointment following Bristol City’s last-gasp equaliser to deny the Owls a valuable three points at Ashton Gate on Easter Monday.

Jermaine Johnson had earlier given Wednesday the lead before Sam Baldock salvaged a point for the hosts in controversial circumstances at the last.

Jones said: “Chris Kirkland has been hit in the face by their lad going up for the cross and if it’s anywhere else on the pitch, it’s a free kick.

“You might have been able to get away with that in the old days but not any more. It’s frustrating because we have come away with a point when it should have been all three.

“We would have taken four points from the two games we had over Easter but we should be talking about maximum points.

“But there is nothing we can do about that now – the players have worked their socks off, they will now get a couple of days off and then we get ready for another big game on Saturday.”

Jones made five changes from the side that beat Barnsley on Saturday, some enforced and others to shuffle his pack given the close proximity of games.

He added: “We’ve had two games in three days and there are a lot of stiff bodies in that dressing room.

“We lost Seyi Olifinjana and Stuart Holden before the game, they were very tight after Saturday.

“Gary Madine was tight after the game on Saturday so we put Steve Howard in there to give us an hour and then Gary would come on.

“Both of them did well today and I thought Gary might have had a penalty at the end but it wasn’t to be.”
