Owls nominated

5 April 2013

Sheffield Wednesday’s official social networks have received international recognition after being nominated for a Shorty Award for the second consecutive year.

Now in their fifth year and highly coveted within the digital industry, the Shorty Awards honour the best producers of real-time short content across the web.

The Owls, who narrowly missed out to eventual winners Liverpool FC last year, are the only football club amongst this year’s six finalists within the ‘Best Sports Team in Social Media’ category.

Also shortlisted this time around are American Football teams the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers alongside US Ice Hockey outfit New Jersey Devils and Indian Premier League cricket team Chennai Super Kings.

Fans from across the globe cast their nominations for the awards via Twitter during January and February, with Wednesday earning over 300 recommendations from Supporters as the Best Sports Team. The Shorty Awards organisers then reviewed the endorsements before announcing the final shortlist.

The club is recognised for its use of social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, where supporters can get regular timely news and information direct to their feeds on the social networks and fans can have their say on the hot topics of the moment.

Additionally, Sheffield Wednesday regularly post exclusive and behind-the-scenes updates from press conferences, live match updates throughout games and offer followers the chance to get team news first from our Twitter.

Winners will be announced at the fifth annual Shorty Awards ceremony on 8 April at The Times Centre, New York, and will also be streamed live online at their website: www.shortyawards.com.
