Striker’s instinct

10 April 2013

Chris Maguire has told Wednesday Player he let his instincts take over as he fired the Owls to a dramatic win over Millwall on Tuesday.

Deep into stoppage time, Maguire connected with a sweet volley from Danny Pugh’s corner, showing excellent technique to blast the ball into the top corner.

The 24-year-old was naturally delighted with his first goal for the Owls – which helped lift Wednesday to 14th in the Championship, six points clear of the drop zone.

He said: “I just went with my instinct. I had a feeling the ball would be swung into the near post, I’ve managed to run beyond the defender and volley it into the net.

“For me it was a great feeling to score because it’s been a long time coming.

“As you can see by the way I celebrated it meant a lot to me.”

The former Portsmouth man has made just nine appearances this term for the Owls – five in the Championship – but was thrilled with his maiden goal for the club.

“I think that will give me a major lift and do my confidence the world of good and hopefully I can kick on from here,” Maguire added.

“I’ve kept my head down and I’ve worked hard in training and hopefully it’s starting to pay off.

“You have to keep working hard in football because you never know when you will get your opportunity.

“We showed we’ve got great character at Millwall, going right until the end of the game. if we continue to show that kind of character then I’m sure we will be fine.”
