Jones rues Millers exit

6 August 2013

Wednesday boss Dave Jones rued his side’s defensive display at The New York Stadium on Tuesday as Rotherham picked up a 2-1 win in round one of the Capital One Cup.

Thunderous strikes from Ben Pringle and Lee Frecklington sealed the Millers’ passage to the next round and although Rhys McCable halved the deficit, Jones was disappointed by the build-up to both Rotherham goals.

He said: “We know what kind of team Rotherham are, they play for free kicks, corners and long throws and if you don’t defend the first ball, you defend the second.

“We knew what was coming but we didn’t deal with it and that’s the most disappointing thing because we are better than that.

“But it’s August 6 and I’m just glad it’s not May 6."

Wednesday were reduced to ten men in the second half when Jermaine Johnson saw red for aiming a headbutt at Ben Pringle.

And Jones criticised Johnson, insisting the Jamaican international should know better.

He said: “He’s got to control himself. He’s not said anything to me because there is nothing that he can say.

“It was just stupidity and you cannot do that in a football match.

“I played the game and I never did anything like that. If I did, I wouldn’t have been too happy because this game is hard enough without things like that making it harder."
