Forest edge five-goal PDL clash

16 December 2013

The Owls Under-21s were edged out by the odd goal in five in an eventful Professional Development League clash against Nottingham Forest on Monday.

Forest had led 2-0 at Middlewood Road before a double from Franck Betra got Wednesday back on level terms but the Reds struck late through James Demetriou to claim the win.

The visitors broke the deadlock on the half hour-mark when Jack Blake’s free kick arrowed into the back of the net past Cameron Dawson.

But the Owls responded well and came close on three occasions to levelling before the break.

Forest keeper Jordan Smith denied Andelko Savic with a smart save and then thwarted Jack Stobbs moments later to preserve his side's lead.

Ayo Obileye saw his thumping effort from 30 yards come crashing back off the crossbar as Forest went into the break one goal to the good.

After the restart a neat swivel by Savic on the edge of the area gave the striker room to fire inches over the bar before the visitors doubled their lead, with Kieran Wallace connecting at the near post to give Forest a 2-0 lead.

Savic then saw his back post header athletically saved by Smith before second half substitute Betra hauled the Owls back into the game.

The young Frenchman’s first goal came with a huge slice of fortune as the striker’s deflected effort deceived the goalkeeper and looped into the net.

And just moments later, Betra muscled past his marker before pulling the trigger from inside the area to fire Wednesday level.

Adam Hinchliffe came within a whisker of completing the comeback with a thunderous effort from distance, forcing an outstanding save from the Forest keeper, before the Reds stole the points at the last.

A low cross from the right was met by Demetriou who guided the ball home from inside the six yard box, leaving the Owls with no time for recovery.
