Stuart Gray is basking in the glory of the Owls’ 2-1 win over Leicester on Tuesday – and looking no further from that juncture.

Wednesday turned in a spirited performance to dismantle the league leaders, with Connor Wickham’s brace turning the game on its head after Anthony Knockaert gave the visitors an early lead.

And Gray – who stepped into the breach following the departure of Dave Jones on Sunday – was delighted with the display of his temporary charges.

He said: “I thought the players gave everything and first and foremost that’s all you can ask.

“Obviously, I was disappointed for Dave and Paul Wilkinson who lost their jobs, but these things happen in football and everyone understands that.

“I think the players had a lot to prove. I said to them before the game that all any crowd can ask for is to see their players roll up their sleeves and give everything they have got.

“The players did that, the crowd responded and I thank them for that. In the last ten minutes particularly, they turned up the noise and helped us over the line.”

Gray fielded the inevitable question on his immediate future and reiterated that he is working one day a time.

He added: “I was honoured to be asked by the chairman to take control for tonight’s game.

“I will enjoy tonight and talk to the chairman again tomorrow. I am told there have been over 50 applications for the job and I’m not surprised because this is a fantastic club with a brilliant history and fan base.

“This position I’m sure will attract managers in and out of work and whatever decision the chairman arrives it will be the best decision for the football club.”
