In good shape

21 February 2013

The Owls are in good shape going into Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace at Hillsborough, says manager Dave Jones.

The promotion-chasing Eagles land in S6 handily placed in fourth spot while, conversely, Wednesday are three places from the trap door and searching for safety.

And with both sides in encouraging form, Jones is expecting a tough test and remains hopeful of a full squad from which to select.

He said: “All being well, everybody will be fit.

“We have three of four niggles and we will train on Friday and assess the situation before the game.

“Overall, we are in good shape for this stage of the season. We are fit, we are well, and we look strong and hard to beat.

“Competition for places certainly helps. I have always said that any team is only as good as its substitutes’ bench and we are seeing that here, we have some real quality on the bench.

“That can only be a good thing because without competition, you have nothing.”

The Owls head into the Palace clash just two points clear of danger – yet a whole host of clubs are in and around the relegation mix.

And Jones believes up to 14 teams could find themselves looking over their shoulder as the business end approaches.

“There is still a lot of football to be played and things can change very quickly, as we have seen around the Championship,” he explained.

“ A couple of months  ago, a lot of people were saying it was a case of three from four in the relegation zone but you look at the table now and it could be three from as many as 12 to 14.

“It is so tight and congested down there and that is what you want, you need other teams to drop points while you keep ticking along.

“As I have said before, all we can do is concentrate on doing our own job and everything else will take care of itself.”
