McCabe edges Mitre vote

11 February 2013

Sheffield Wednesday’s nomination for the Mitre Goal of the Year 2012 is Rhys McCabe’s strike against Charlton in the Owls’ final home game of the calendar year.

Last week swfc.co.uk asked for supporters to decide which goal should be entered in the Mitre Goal of the Year category at the Football League Awards 2013.

From the shortlist of seven, McCabe’s thunderous half volley against the Addicks came out on top, gaining 24 per cent of the vote.

With the score tied at 0-0, Miguel Llera’s corner was cleared to the former Rangers ace 20 yards out and the Scot hit a fierce half volley that flew into the top corner.

That strike edged the vote with Michail Antonio’s dramatic winner against Carlisle in April 2012 finishing close behind on 20 per cent.

Given the importance and the quality of the strike in the 95th minute – it is little surprised to see Antonio’s goal perched in the top three.

Chris O’Grady’s derby day winner against Sheffield United took third place, weighing in with 15 per cent.

RHYS McCABE v Charlton (22.12.12) – 24 per cent
MICHAIL ANTONIO v Carlisle (21.4.12) – 20 per cent
CHRIS O’GRADY v Sheffield United (26.2.12) – 15 per cent
