Forward thinking

15 January 2013

Dave Jones was disappointed to exit the FA Cup on Tuesday at MK Dons and equally frustrated that his side failed to trouble the home side’s goalkeeper throughout the lion’s share of the contest.

Goals either side of the break from Shaun Williams and Dean Bowditch saw the Dons through to round four as the Owls matched their hosts all over the field save the final third.

Jones said: “We didn’t really get many shots in on goal and that was disappointing because we saw plenty of the ball.

“But we didn’t seem to want to shoot and that’s not like us. We had more than a few chances to get the ball into the box but ended up almost passing it back to the goalkeeper.

“We need to be more forward thinking because got into the positions and the build-play was right but we need to be taking shots at goal.

“I’m disappointed to go out of the cup because we had a chance to go through and the side we put out was good enough to win the game.

“And I really felt for the fans behind that goal who came all the way down here on a very cold night.”

The manager issued an injury update on Jermaine Johnson, who departed play after just 13 minutes through injury.

He said: “JJ pulled up with his back and I think it was the way he fell more than anything.

“It’s too early to say about Saturday and Wolves but we will assess him tomorrow and take it from there.”
