Never say never

4 January 2013

Dave Jones is looking forward to his first FA Cup campaign as Owls boss, beginning with the visit of MK Dons to Hillsborough on Saturday.

The League 1 promotion hopefuls take the third round trip to S6 and Jones has underlined his desire for progress in the domestic game’s premier cup competition.

But first, Wednesday must overcome the threat of the Dons, and the manager said:

“MK Dons are a solid side, a strong team who are doing quite well.

“It’s just as important as a league game would be, though the league is the priority because people will say ‘you won’t get to a cup final’.

“But I’ve proved that one wrong, so no matter where you are you always have an opportunity to get there. I’m not a believer in taking your foot off the gas.”

Jones, who guided former employers Cardiff to the Wembley final of 2008, continued:

“You never say never in football. Every time you put a team out, you have to believe you’re going to win.

“It can happen, if you believe it and it’s your year. It’s like getting points, you have to make it your game. There’s nothing impossible.

The manager has said there could be changes in his starting X1 for the Dons clash, although he intimated they may be minimal.

Jones added: “I’m not a great believer in making wholesale changes across the board.

“The Christmas period saw us play a lot of games in a short space of time and we played with pretty much the same players, so you could see some changes on Saturday.”
