Good progress

27 July 2013

Satisfied but could always do better – that was the verdict from Dave Jones following the Owls’ 1-1 draw at Chesterfield on Saturday.

While the manager was pleased with the pre-season progress overall, he stressed there is always room for improvement:

“We were OK and we have had a decent pre-season with some tough tests and that was another one today.

“We could have done better, particularly when it was one-way traffic for the first half an hour before they scored, but most managers will say their teams could have done better in most games.

“We could have been a couple of goals ahead in the first half but they scored and suddenly we stop playing and you can’t do that.

“But we got our rhythm back and got the goal at the end, which was a really good hit from Chrissie Maguire.”

As expected, Jones shuffled his pack once more and gave no indication of what his starting line-up will be when the Owls kick off their Championship campaign at QPR next Saturday.

The likes of Reda Johnson, Lewis Buxton, Jeremy Helan, Michail Antonio and Jacques Maghoma sat the Spireites game out and the boss will assess his troops ahead of the capital clash.

He said: “We have a few tired bodies and a couple of knocks because it’s been a hard pre-season for the boys, we have worked them hard.

“We’ve only had one impact injury, though, and that’s really good news because it’s surprising the number of injuries you can pick up in pre-season.

“We’ll take a look at the players in midweek, see how they are coming on and pick the team for Saturday from there.”
