Owls boss Dave Jones was pleased with his side’s work on Tuesday evening after defeating Stockport 3-0 at Edgeley Park.

Michail Antonio, who made his first start for Wednesday since his injury set-back in March, put the Owls ahead after 43 seconds.

Martin Taylor’s powerful header made it 2-0 on 12 minutes before Chris Maguire added a third from the penalty spot moments before the half time whistle.

While Jones acknowledges the scoreline could have been more emphatic, the Wednesday manager was more concerned with the passing, movement and fitness side of the game for his squad and was pleased with the workout.

He told swfc.co.uk: “Right now we’re working on our passing and movement. We played virtually two different teams in each half and tonight, the majority of the lads got another 45 minutes under their belt.

“Michail got 30 minutes which was pleasing for him and he’ll get another run out at the weekend against Scunthorpe, like they all will.

“When we get them over to Portugal, they will move up to 90 minute games but at the moment we want to get 35-45 minutes out of them.

“They all look fit and strong and we’re just making sure none of the lads pick up any injuries.”

Wednesday continue their pre-season games programme on Saturday with a trip to League 2 side Scunthorpe, where Jones is looking for more of the same from his side.

He added: “We could have scored more goals tonight but that wasn’t what the game was all about, it’s more about the running and movement rather than the finesse part of it at this stage.

“The boys are working hard, getting their running in and I’m pleased by how things are going.”
