Pleased with the workout

17 July 2013

The importance of a pre-season workout invariably overrides any result and that was the case on Tuesday night in Albufeira when the Owls went down 3-1 to Portugese side Braga.

Playing in intense heat, Wednesday posted a valuable 90 minutes to add to the base already in place during their week-long training camp across Europe.

And Dave Jones stressed the importance of the players topping their fitness levels after the game:

“I’m pleased with the workout because the players worked very hard in very hot conditions.

“But that’s why we come to places like this, the climate is important to help us achieve the fitness levels required. We’re here to work hard and that’s what we got out if it.

“In terms of the game, we started well and I was pleased with the first half performance.

“They changed their team at half time and that changed the game really, the tempo was different.

“There were some strange decisions out there from the officials and had it been a proper game, I’m sure some of the reactions might have been a bit different!”

The Wednesday boss highlighted the differences of playing a European side in Braga who, as was expected, played a neat, passing possession game.

He said: “I thought we could have shown a little more patience, English teams tend to try to look for the killer ball whereas European teams don’t do that.

“They are a good side with good players who are very comfortable with the ball at their feet and we knew that.

“But it was a good exercise for us and Hull will present us with a different game and a different challenge on Saturday.”
