Stepping up

12 July 2013

As the countdown continues to the big kick-off on 3 August, the next step for Wednesday is the short hop to Scunthorpe on Saturday.

The Iron host the Owls in a pre-season friendly at Glandford Park (3.00pm) – 24 hours before Wednesday fly out to their European training camp in Portugal.

Manager Dave Jones told swfc.co.uk: “We have been back in for two weeks and the lads have put in a lot of hard work, which is what pre-season is all about.

“They were all given programmes to follow over the summer and they have been very sensible.

“The Stockport game on Tuesday was the first run-out and we go to Scunthorpe just looking to take the next step.

“Results are never important in pre-season, it’s all about the fitness and conditioning of the players for what will be another demanding season ahead.

“The staff have done a great job as we haven’t suffered any strain injuries, only one impact injury and there’s nothing anyone can do about that.”

Jones is keen to take the Owls contingent to the European climes of Portugal, where Wednesday will increase their pre-season preparations with games against local top-flight side Braga and newly-promoted Premiership outfit Hull.

The Owls boss added: “It’s a superb facility that everyone can enjoy in Portugal, it really is first class.

“But first and foremost we are all there to work and it is hard work for the players over there but extremely beneficial.

“The games we are playing should give us a contrast and really help us increase the preparations for what we are aiming for, which is against QPR in the Championship.”
