Enjoying football

15 March 2013

Wednesday stalwart Anthony Gardner has so far reflected positively on his first season at Hillsborough.

Gardner joined the Owls in summer 2012, making the switch from Crystal Palace, and has racked up 28 appearances for Wednesday in all competitions.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s meeting with table-toppers Cardiff, the 32-year-old has told swfc.co.uk he is enjoying his football in S6.

“I’m enjoying my football here,” he said.

“Like any professional footballer, you just want to play games, enjoy your surroundings and enjoy playing week in, week out.

“I’ve had injury problems in the past that have hampered my appearances but the last couple of years have been good for me.

“I’m really happy at the minute with how things are going for me here and I want to be a part of this club moving forward.”

Gardner has been a defensive rock for the Owls this term and has helped his side notch seven clean sheets in his last 14 appearances.

No doubt the ex-Spurs man will be tested this weekend with title favourites Cardiff in town but it is a fixture the stopper is looking forward to.

He said: “For sure this game will be a tough one, they’ve been very strong all season, hence being top of the league.

“I’m confident we can beat anyone really, you just have to make sure you get your tactics right, prepare yourselves properly and focus on what we need to do.

“When you’re picking up results and winning games, your confidence is a lot higher and that starts with the players and filters through the whole club.

“When you’re playing well like we are, you’re always upbeat ahead of games like these when the league leaders come to your ground.”
