Help us over the line

3 May 2013

Dave Jones has paid a special tribute to Owls fans as the curtain comes down on the Championship campaign this weekend.

Wednesday face Middlesbrough at Hillsborough on Saturday backed by over 30,000 home fans willing the players over the line.

And Jones insists that Wednesdayites will have a huge part to play in what is taking shape to be a dramatic day of second tier football.

He said: “I speak to a lot of other managers and people in the game and the quality of our support is often a talking point.

“We are very fortunate to be in a position where we can call upon such support and no one at this football club ever takes that for granted. I have nothing but admiration for all of them.

“We will have another huge crowd tomorrow and all we can ask is that the fans stay with us throughout the game, as they have done all season, and help us get the win we need.”

Boro, meanwhile, will arrive in S6 with a depleted squad and no relative issues to be decided but Jones says that will have little if any bearing on the visitors’ approach to the game.

Boss Tony Mowbray has revealed he will not be playing any of the trio of players currently on loan at the club, while Boro also have fitness concerns elsewhere.

Jones reasoned: “I’ve never understood the saying of ‘they have nothing to play for’. That has never happened in my career.

“Everyone on that pitch will have something to play for and anyone expecting an easy ride will be mistaken.

“Whoever they have available will make no difference to how they play because they will want to win this game. They will want to do well for their supporters apart from anything else.

“But we know what we have to do, the players are completely focused and they know what is expected of them.

“I would rather be in our position then some of the other teams down there because we have the extra point.

“We are confident we can get the win and now it is up to us to deliver it.”
