Kirkland delighted

6 May 2013

Chris Kirkland was delighted for everyone connected with the club on Saturday as the Owls confirmed their place in the Championship for next season.

Wednesday needed victory over Middlesbrough to guarantee safety and ran out deserved 2-0 winners on the final day.

The Owls goalkeeper, who has played all 46 league games this season, spoke to swfc.co.uk after the game.

He said: “I’m delighted for everyone. It was vital that we stayed in this division and we managed to do that.

“It was a tense week leading up to the game and it was waiting for it to come that was the hard bit but it’s done now and we got the result we wanted.

“The week seemed to drag and the game was constantly on your mind.

“But the lads have been great and I’m delighted for everyone including the staff and the fans.”

Steve Howard gave the Owls an early advantage, scoring his maiden goal for the club after eight minutes before Leroy Lita put Wednesday in a commanding position on the half hour mark.

On the game he added: “Our gameplan was to score early and try to go into half time with a comfortable lead and the lads were magnificent in achieving that.

“I’m pleased for Steve, he’s done great since he came in and what a time for him to score his first goal.

“It was important we gave the supporters a performance and a result to send them home happy.

“The fans have backed us superbly home and away and they are probably up there with the best fans I have seen.

“We can go away now and I’m sure the manager and the chairman will be busy over the summer and before we know it, it will be pre-season again.”
